I really love your blog. This article is priceless. Far too little work has been done with the Golden Dawn spread and it has seldom been written about outside of order instructional documents.

Hi Sheri,

I'm glad :D

The confusion you feel is natural - I think it all comes down to trusting yourself, or perhaps, trusting the process.

When we give Tarot readings for other people, we need to guard against questioning ourselves. As soon as we question ourselves, we get into problems. One side of our minds attacks the other. When our mind is split, when our mind attacks itself, it can never bring its full attention to bear on the reading.

There is a place for self reflection, but too much of it can attack our confidence. It can have the opposite effect of what it was intended to achieve.

The Tarot is irrational. The mind feels safe with "rational" processing - the Tarot demands a level of irrational processing. It's a knack, like learning to swim - once learned it becomes much more fluid, much more in tune with the ebbs and flows of a reading.

Confusion is natural, because the Tarot is irrational. Try to accept the confusion. Try to avoid attacking yourself with it.

Its a learning process, and it never stops. We all feel confused and unsure, but we all need to try and accept this as a necessary condition of life - and of the Tarot.

Keep pushing forward with the Tarot and you will be surprised at just how differently you'll feel about "readings".

Hi Douglas,

I really liked the way Ginger explained how she does a two card pairing. It helped me so much to take away some of the confusion in readings.

Hi Tabitha Dial,

Thank you for your kind words :D

It's a great sign that you're allowing your intuition to flow when you realise you've been making connections between the cards, without even knowing it. Most Tarot readers will be using a lot of the techniques "out there" without even knowing it. The unconscious mind recognises certain patterns in the cards and informs the conscious mind accordingly. I think your comment shows you have a great connection with the Tarot :)

What a wonderful thread. Through Ginger and Douglas talking back and forth, I've come to realize that I was certainly reading pairings the other day with the ol' Celtic Cross spread. I suppose it's hard not to see the connections between cards, and only natural that these might fall into pairs. We think quite symmetrically all the time without knowing it.

I love having all this insight. I'm so glad this blog's around.

Hi Jason,

I agree! Book T and the Book of Thoth both seem to reveal something new with each reading. It's strange how this happens. Perhaps it's just that we've understood that little bit more than before, allowing something new to click into place.

I've been finding more and more interesting connections with the Elements in the Golden Dawn material. I'm going to see if I can find that quote by Agrippa - I'm sure that it will expand my current understanding of the Elemental interactions within a Tarot reading :D

Hi Ginger,

...the easier it is for one paired meaning to “stand out” in my mind…and the more accurate the reading seems.

Awesome! Allowing one paired meaning to stand out is the best approach to take. This allows the intuition to work, and avoids confusion. I agree, more accuracy seems to occur this way :)

Sometimes, with all the different associations the Tarot has, it can seem overwhelming. I think you're taking the right approach by not allowing yourself to become lost in all these different possibilities - especially because you're allowing the Tarot to speak directly to you.

Thank you for sharing your experiences :)
