The very first festival was held in the year 2000. Its origins grow out of a desire to celebrate the occult or esoteric. Before this time, certain people had been persecuted for holding occult beliefs (in particular the late Mr Derek Taylor, a healer and trance medium), and as a way to counteract this negative association, not only for the people who had been vilified but also for the esoteric in general, the festival was set up.
They state: “Occulture stands for tolerance, open mindedness and celebration of life”.
This year’s festival will be held on the 23rd of May. It was originally meant to be a day time event but it has since been extended well into the night. The Solar, or day time event will start from 11.30am-5.30pm. It will be held at:
The Courtyard TheatreBowling Green Walk
40 Pitfield Street, Hoxton N1 6EU
The Lunar, or night time event will start at 6pm-11pm. It will be held at:
84-86 Great Eastern Street,
London EC2
The Festival will feature international speakers, performers & artists over 3 stages, plus art installations, film festival and a packed occult bazaar.
Of particular interest will be the Tarot Cabaret featuring the Brighton beach based Tarot Reader, Paul Hughes-Barlow. I’ve known Paul for several years now and I’m sure people who watch Paul’s performance will be in for a real good time. To find out more information about Paul, please visit his website, Supertarot, where he discuss, Tarot, Tarot card meanings and divinatory definitions, Elemental Dignities, Tarot Lessons and the Opening of the Key.
