Hi Tabitha Dial,

Great quote! :)

<blockquote>
In the RWS, do you think The Fool cares about that cliff edge, the border that could mean enlightenment or danger?
</blockquote>

I agree with your interpretation. The Fool is entirely unpredictable. We have to relate to him within the specific context of the reading.

One of the Divinatory Definitions for the Fool, that the Golden Dawn uses, is the "foolishness" when it comes to all things practical. They tend to view him as someone who will make foolish decisions concerning money, career related decisions and other related stuff. Although this can be the case, we do have to view him specifically within the context of the reading. I've found, in contrast, if he's interacting with certain cards, great opportunities career wise - usually involving a change of residence.

Thank you for your kind words :)

Ah. The emptiness of form. That's beautiful.

I just read something that I relate to The Fool:

"Lack of boundaries -- the feeling you don't know where your mind and body end and the world begins -- can be a sign of psychosis and codependency, but also of ecstasy and enlightenment. As an intellectual principle, the loss of boundaries is a potent reminder of our connections to one another, the natural world, history, culture, and perhaps even subtle energies in the air. The human animal exists fundamentally as a living system in communication with other living systems." -- Jay Walljasper and Jon Spayde in "Visionaries: People and Ideas to Change Your Life".

In the RWS, do you think The Fool cares about that cliff edge, the border that could mean enlightenment or danger? I think sometimes yes, and sometimes no, and sometimes he is completely unaware, but always, the answer depends on the situation. We get to fill that emptiness of form as he appears in our readings, our lives.

Thanks for your response, Douglas.

Hi Tabitha Dial,

Thanks for dropping by :)

I think the reason I find the Fool sinister, and disturbing in many ways, is because he represents something that is unknowable; the emptiness of form. He could be anything.

<blockquote>
The Fool reminds me not to STRESS OUT about things. Reconnect with innocence and acceptance. Gotta love that. :-)
</blockquote>

Absolutely! I couldn't agree more.

Lovely!

But the Fool as sinister? I have never thought this way. But maybe part of the reason for this is I do not own or use a Thoth deck?

My impression of the Fool is someone who has nothing but trust in his/herself, someone in a state of bliss, oblivious. This can be dangerous, but sinister? Not in my view. Even a prankster can teach us a great deal about ourselves.

The Fool, in some ways, spins the Wheel of Fortune. He offers the various Aces. He just isn't aware he's doing it.

Thank you for your insightful comment Eartha :)

I like what you said about the Fool, "when he faces to the left he is moving against the trend." This seems very appropriate to the Fool. This got me thinking of the unconscious content of the mind (left can symbolise this); and in this case it could be indicative of unconscious motive. In other words, the Fool acts from unconscious motives, moving against the trend, but without knowing why - or even caring why.

I really appreciated what you shared about the Bodhisattva. The Fool always seemed to me to indicate potencia or starting over. Unpredictable, unreliable or enlightened and living out that potential. In the decks I use most, the Fool faces the left, which sometimes impresses me as moving against the trend and striking out on you own. Thank you, for this post!
