An analogy

Today I made an analogy between writing a story and laying out cards for a tarot reading. I told my so, (he's a fiction writer) that sometimes you lay out 3 cards and you get a fine reading, nothing fancy, but it can tell you a lot. Sometimes you lay out 7-9-11- or more cards and you really can get into the detail of a reading. Like a story, you need background, even if you have no intention of including it in the story. Short and sweet, but with backstory.
