“How inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when so clearly it is Ocean.” Arthur C. Clarke
Water, of all the 4 Elements, is the Element of life. Humans are made from approximately 80% water by mass and 75% of the earth is covered in water.
Water is a simple molecule yet fundamental to life. Water is therefore extremely abundant, and biologically it has great importance both inside cells, and externally, for example as a habitat.
Water has been called the ‘universal solvent’, as more substances can dissolve in it that any other solvent. Often in living organisms, substances must be solution, and water is the solvent which makes this possible. In Tarot readings, this has always helped me understand the Death card. In fact, the Water Element in a reading also assists me in looking for the possibility of spiritual healing.
Water plays a central and critical role in all aspects of life – in the environment, in our economies, in food security, in production, in politics.
Thales, a Greek philosopher concluded that Water was the elemental nature of the world. Notice he doesn’t mention any other Element, only Water.
Water has always been fought over; civilizations have been created around it and our language is coloured by it. We speak of the rivers of time; the sea of ignorance; despair and so on. We talk of the ground running with rivers of blood. Poetry and music have been inspired by it. The soul is often compared to it.
People talk of drowning in a sea of love, or say still waters run deep.
The Water Element is as fundamental to life and civilization as is its real life counterpart. For instance, astrologers hunting for a planet that is capable of supporting life are really hunting for the tell-tale signs of Water.
In religions, Water can play an important role in symbolizing transformation, purification and change.
There are plenty of mythologies from around the world that use Water as the first substance; the pre-material of creation; a sea without end.
In Tarot readings we look for how balanced all the 4 Elements are in relation to each other. A lack or excess of Water can indicate several things. Look for the possibility of fighting over ‘water’ (what ever that might mean to the client); the possibility of love; the possibility of drowning in emotion; the possibility of spiritual transformation or purification. Also, look for the beauty, the arts and civilization. All of these things can be indicated, as can isolation and depression. In extreme cases a lack of Water can indicate sickness; both of body and soul.
Water can also be destructive when we consider the effects of a tsunami.
Contemplate all these different factors when determining what effect Water is having on the life of the client. In many ways, Water can be thought of as the life blood of the Elements; remove it and life stagnates – too much of it and life is destroyed.
